Before we purchased The Lodge, the members of our family made up a “Pros” and “Cons” list to decide if it would be a good family decision to make such a big move. It turned out that we each had a long list of ‘Pros’, but the only ‘Con’ any of us could think of was moving so far away from the grandparents. Had we known about NH pizza, however, that would have been a Big #2 on the ‘con’ side! Why is it that NH does everything else so well, but they just don’t know how to make pizza?

(That was our opinion, anyway, until we found Elvio’s!). Their tag line is “Best Pizza North of the Bronx”, and their pizza really IS pizza! Elvio’s family emigrated to the US in 1925 from Naples, Italy and Catania, Sicily, opening their first pizzeria in the Bronx in 1940. Using old family recipes, they still make their pizza exactly the same way they did back then: each crust is hand-tossed to order and baked on stone decks. They use pure olive oil, whole milk mozzarella, parmesan and romano cheeses, Italian tomatoes, herbs and spices, and no sweeteners of any kind. It was delicious back then and it’s still a winning formula today … “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’ as the saying goes. Another good thing about Elvio’s is that they have free delivery to The Lodge! … unfortunately, they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
